20 minutes from downtown Sacramento. Limited private parking is available on-sight, first come-first-serve. Streetside parking is ample & free on Sundays, despite signs saying otherwise. We will enjoy private access to the space, inside & out.

Theme: The Outsiders - Greasers vs. Socs

Greasers were a youth subculture popular in the 1950s to 1960s with working and lower class young adults in the United States. Socials or "Socs" were their upper class preppy counterparts. Tension between the two groups was popularized in the classic novel The Outsiders. Other pop culture references include The Wild One (with Marlon Brando) and Grease (with Oliva Newton-John and John Travolta). In Grease, Sandy begins as a soc & ends up a greaser. Greasers: think greased pompadour hairstyles, black or white t-shirts, leather or denim jackets, cuffed jeans, capris & pedal pushers. Socials: think varsity letterman jackets, Chuck Taylor All-Stars, dungarees, hair ribbons, full skirts & petticoats, vintage button-down sweaters & penny loafers. Feel free to add contemporary twists to the theme. For "Outsiders" fashion inspiration, visit the gallery of our first "Outsiders" inspired slam (back in 2019 in Medford, OR) by searching #OutsidersSlam on Instagram. Please remember, our fashion theme is not a costume. We celebrate diversity, body positivity, self-expression, style, and creativity. Let us know if you have any questions!

Models:

Please arrive dressed in theme and ready to shoot.  Additional wardrobe will be provided on location for models to incorporate into their look by Radbird.  Models are welcome to visit Radbird's locations in Oakland or Berkeley during open hours to browse their curated collection of "Outsiders" inspired fashion (optional). Radbird will be giving away a prize to the model who gets most creative & engaging with their fashion (just for fun, slams are not competitions). Tamara Ables of Vixens Creations will be on hand during arrivals to offer makeup touchups and micro sessions, first-come first-serve. Arrivals begin at 5pm.  Please try to arrive by 5:30pm, in time for a lighting demo by Nanlite USA. We'll have a space designated for models inside JW Jeep Wrecking for changing and model's belongings. Check in, explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, practice shooting with Nanlite lighting, and meet other creatives.  Introductions begin at 6pm. We begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different photographers in quick 10 minute sessions.

Photographers:

We appreciate it when photographers & videographers dress in sync with the vibe and rock the theme, but they aren't required to. Photographers should wear comfortable shoes and arrive with their camera ready to shoot.  Please try to arrive by 5pm, in time for lighting & gear demos. After checking in, browse Tamron's lenses, Nanlite's lighting, & Fujifilm cameras, all available to borrow on location. Action Camera will be available to assist.  Prizes will be given away at the end to the participants who get most creative and engaging with Fujifilm, Nanlite USA and Tamron Americas gear (just for fun, slams are not competitions).  Explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, take a few test shots and chat with fellow creatives. Introductions start at 6pm. We begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different models in quick 10 minute sessions. Personal lighting and film photography are welcome but please tread lightly and check in with us before flying a drone. Photography assistants are required to purchase a general ticket.

This invitation is required to attend. To reserve your spot, please register and purchase your ticket after reading & agreeing to our rules on our website at portraitslam.com/rules.  Your ticket will become non-refundable after May 16th. Only registered participants are allowed to attend our events. Please check in with us in advance to request a special exception. We work hard to curate a balanced & diverse group of creatives. Please let us know in advance if you need to cancel.
