Theme:

The 90's, commonly regarded as the "Golden Age" of hip-hop, was rich with ground-breaking music and greatly influenced 1990's streetwear style. During the 90's: A Tribe Called Quest debuted, the Fresh Prince moved to Bel-Air, MC Hammer rocked parachute pants, the Beastie Boys released Ill Communication, East Coast feuded with West Coast, and Salt-N-Pepa became the first female rap group to win a grammy.  Movies and TV shows that feature iconic 90's streetwear fashion include White Men Can't Jump, Pulp Fiction, Clueless, In Living Color, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

American sportswear brands had a huge impact on 90'streetwear fashion, most notably Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas, Kangol, Starter, Champion, and Supreme - as did cultural brands like FUBU, Phat Farm, Baby Phat, Pelle Pelle, Ecko, and Wu Wear. Bold patterns and colors were popular in the early 90's. Camo patterns in the late 90's. Denim dungaress made a comeback, often worn with one or both straps unclasped. Sports jerseys, letterman's and snapback hats were extremely popular. In New York, Timberlands and Lugz boots paired perfectly with oversized jeans, puffy jackets, and hoodies.

This theme is not a costume. Challenge yourself to incorporate 90's streetwear fashion into your own unique style & seek vibe inspiration from your favorite aspects of 1990's swag. Help inspire others by sharing outfits and/or accessories on Instagram - tag @portrait_slam and we'll share it.  *As always, we celebrate individuality & creativity: please feel free to express that uniqueness. Photographers:

We appreciate it when photographers dress in sync with the vibe and rock the theme, but they aren't expected to. Photographers should wear comfortable shoes and arrive with their camera ready to shoot.  Please arrive between 4:00 and 4:45pm. After checking in, explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, check out Focal Point's gear, take a few test shots, and chat with fellow creatives. Introductions start at 5pm. After intros, we begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different models in quick sessions. Videography, off camera flash, and film photography are welcome but please check in with us before flying a drone. Photography assistants are required to purchase a general ticket.

Dallas, OR's Focal Point Photography (Oregon's best independent camera shop) will be on hand with an assortment of lenses and gear for photographers to borrow during the slam. Don't miss this incredible opportunity!  Come early and check our Focal Point Photography's selection before intros begin at 5pm. Thanks Focal Point!
