About the Event
Join us as we open the doors to one of Oregon's most historic buildings. Vacant and vast with winding stairways, mysterious corridors, moody natural light, ancient redwood and exposed brick - a perfect setting for an Autumnal Equinox and a gothic themed slam. "Gothic" is an ambigious, shifting term that dates back to the late 18th century when the scientific "Age of Enlightment" gave way to a new interest in emotion, medieval castles, gloomy abbeys, damsels in distress, melancholic villans and the supernatural. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, gothic style has been reenvisioned in literature (Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Dracula, Jane Erye), cinema (The Craft, From Hell, True Blood), music (The Cure, Bauhaus, Yōsei Teikoku), and fashion (victorian romanticism, Cyber-goth, Lolita-goth). Gothic genres often explore the tension between darkness and light. Robert Louis Stevenson said it best: “In each of us, two natures are at war - the good and the evil. All our lives the fight goes on between them, and one of them must conquer. But in our own hands lies the power to choose - what we want most to be, we are.”
