About the Event
Portrait Slam is returning to Salem and a simplier time - when beatnik writers & fashionistas rode electric streetcars dressed in turtleneck sweaters and jet black shades. On October 24th, take a reprieve from urban hustle, ride the rails to the end of the line, and join us in the countryside for a fall fashion shoot inspired by the stylish & rebellious beatnik era of the late 1940's, 1950's, and early 1960's. Explore the vintage beauty of trolleys from across the world (England, Belgium, Hong Kong, Australia) & the United States (Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Vancouver BC, Montana) at Powerland Heritage Park's Oregon Electric Railroad Museum in Salem, OR.

Theme:
The Beat movement existed in the post war years of counterculture as creativity blossomed in poetry, novels, music and artwork. "Beatniks" were effortlessly cool and stylish. Fashion included skinny jeans, berets, oversized sweaters, stripped tops, capris, black leotards, ballet flats & newsboy caps. Beatnik style was often androgynous in silhouette, like Audrey Hepburn dancing in Funny Face while the squares watched in dismay. Tap into the rebellious and experimental ideas of Jack Kerouac, Amiri Baraka, Brenda Knight, & William S. Burroughs. Explore #BeatnikStyle on Instagram and check out @LizzieBluntt's custom moodboard here https://pin.it/2HMt62Z for vibe inspo.
Models:
A beatnik-themed wardrobe will be provided on location by Salem's Top Drawer Boutique for models to incorporate into their look, beginning at 2pm - please don't miss this! Prizes will be awarded to the model who rocks Top Drawer's wardrobe hardest. For further wardrobe advice: reach out to Top Drawer on Instagram at @TopDrawerSalem. Consider fall weather and expect to layer up or down, bring base neutrals you're comfortable in, and sturdy shoes to take full advantage of the space. *As always, we celebrate individuality & creativity: please feel free to express that uniqueness. In other words, it's ok to get weird!
*Makeup: Ashley Larson will be offering free makeup styling on location before the slam, by appointment. Spots are limited - don't hesitate to reach out to Ashley on Instagram at @AshleysHairDesign to schedule and exchange ideas. Thanks Ashley!

Photographers:
We appreciate it when photographers dress in sync with the vibe and rock the theme, but they aren't expected to. Photographers should wear comfortable shoes and arrive with their camera ready to shoot. Please try to arrive by 2:30pm. After checking in, explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, take a few test shots, and chat with fellow creatives. Introductions start at 3pm. Afterwards, we begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different models in quick 10 minute sessions. Videography, off camera flash, and film photography are welcome but please check in with us before flying a drone. Photography assistants are required to purchase a general ticket.
*Dallas, OR's Focal Point Photography (our favorite camera shop in Oregon) will be on-hand offering free gear rentals throughout the slam - this is an excellent opportunity to try a new camera, lens, or light tool - thank you Focal Point!
