About the Event

Portrait Slam is heading to Connecticut and a simpler time - when beatnik writers & fashionistas rode steam engines dressed in turtleneck sweaters and jet black shades.  On Saturday July 24th, take a reprieve from urban hustle, ride the rails to the end of the line, and join us in the countryside for a summer fashion shoot inspired by the stylish & rebellious beatnik era of the late 1940's, 1950's, and early 1960's.

The Beat movement existed in the post war years of counterculture as creativity blossomed in poetry, novels, music and artwork. "Beatniks" were effortlessly cool and stylish. Fashion included skinny jeans, berets, oversized sweaters, stripped tops, capris, black leotards, ballet flats & newsboy caps. Beatnik style was often androgynous in silhouette, like Audrey Hepburn dancing in Funny Face while the squares watched in dismay.  Tap into the rebellious and experimental ideas of Jack Kerouac, Amiri Baraka, Brenda Knight, & William S. Burroughs

A vintage beatnik-themed wardrobe will be provided on location by Sophia's Gallery for models to incorporate into their look, beginning at 5pm - please don't miss this! Prizes will be awarded to the model who rocks Sophia's Gallery's wardrobe with the most creativity and style. Consider July weather and expect to layer up or down, bring base neutrals you're comfortable in, and sturdy shoes to take full advantage of the space. As always, we celebrate individuality & creativity: please feel free to express that uniqueness. In other words, it's ok to get weird.

Makeup: we currently have one volunteer space available for a makeup artist to offer free touchups on location during arrivals. Are you a makeup artist insterested in connecting with creatives or earning a free model or photographer ticket for your services? Please let us kjnow!

We appreciate it when photographers dress in sync with the vibe and rock the theme, but they aren't expected to. Photographers should wear comfortable shoes and arrive with their camera ready to shoot.  Please try to arrive by 5:30pm. After checking in, explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, take a few test shots, and chat with fellow creatives. Introductions start at 6pm. Afterwards, we begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different models in quick 10 minute sessions. Videography, off camera flash, and film photography are welcome but please check in with us before flying a drone. Photography assistants are required to purchase a general ticket.

Tamron USA will be on-hand offering free camera lens rentals throughout the slam - this is an excellent opportunity to try new equipment!
