Theme: Mythical Creatures
Throughout history, tales of mythical creatures have captured the human imagination in cultures across the world. They often express the fears, desires, and values of human nature. Not all mythical creatures are sinister: Madremonte protects floral and fauna from mankind. Xana spreads feelings of love and peace through her hypnotic singing and blesses weary travelers with water. Vodnik brings humble fisherman good luck. Pegasus helps heros conquer their foes. Ceasg grants three wishes when captured. Faires, pixies, gnomes, elves and unicorns can be powerful allies when treated with respect. For those seeking the darker realms of folklore: Basilsik murders with a single glance. Surale lures his victims into the forest and tickles them to death. Dames Blanches destroys those who don't dance. Herne the Hunter withers away trees. Chupacabre drinks livestock blood. Wendigo has an appetite for human flesh and Banshee screams omens of death.
This theme is not a costume. Challenge yourself to incorporate a mythical creature into your own unique style. Consider spring bloom & the landscape of the Sierra Nevadas. Help inspire others by sharing outfits and/or accessories on Instagram, tag @portrait_slam and we'll share. For further inspiration, search "mythical creature fashion" on Pinterest. Portrait slams celebrate diversity, self-expression, style, individuality and creativity. Let us know if you have questions about our theme and, as always, don't be afraid to get weird.
Models:
Please arrive dressed in theme and ready to shoot. A mythical creatures themed wardrobe will be provided on location by My Discovery Shop Rosevile & Sacramento for models to incorporate into their look, beginning at 9am - please don't miss this! A prize will be awarded to the model who rocks Discovery Shop's wardrobe with the most creativity and style. Makeup By Alaina will be offering walk-up micro sessions & touchups during arrivals. Consider late May weather and expect to layer up or down, bring base neutrals you're confident in, and comfortable shoes to take full advantage of the space. Models will have their own dedicated changing space inside St. Joseph's Cultural Center. Check-in, meet fellow creatives, browse the space for inspiring locations to shoot, & sample floral artistry by Carson Valley Florist & lighting by Action Camera. Please be prepared to work with many different photographers and models in short micro sessions. Please try and arrive by 9:30am. Introductions start at 10am.

Photographers:
We appreciate it when photographers dress in sync with the vibe and rock the theme, but they aren't required to. Photographers should wear comfortable shoes and arrive with their camera ready to shoot. Please try to arrive by 9:30am. After checking in, browse Action Camera's selection of lighting equipment and Tamron's selection of lenses available for use (optional) on location. They'll be giving a prize away at the end to the photographer who gets most creative with equipment. Explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, take a few test shots, and chat with fellow creatives. Introductions start at 10am. We begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different models in quick 10 minute sessions. Videography, off camera flash, and film photography are welcome but please check in with us before flying a drone. Photography assistants are required to purchase a general ticket.
