Theme: Gothic Halloween Haunt

Join us as we open the doors to one of Austin, TX's most historic buildings.  Vacant and vast with winding stairways, mysterious corridors, moody natural light, and exposed brick - a perfect setting for an Autumnal Equinox and a Gothic Halloween Haunt themed slam. "Gothic" is an ambiguous, shifting term that dates back to the late 18th century when the scientific "Age of Enlightenment" gave way to a new interest in emotion, medieval castles, gloomy abbeys, damsels in distress, melancholic villains and the supernatural. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, gothic style has been re-envisioned in literature (Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Dracula, Jane Erye), cinema (The Craft, From Hell, True Blood), music (The Cure, Bauhaus, Yōsei Teikoku), and fashion (Victorian romanticism, Cyber-goth, Lolita-goth). Gothic genres often explore the tension between darkness and light. Robert Louis Stevenson said it best: “In each of us, two natures are at war - the good and the evil. All our lives the fight goes on between them, and one of them must conquer. But in our own hands lies the power to choose - what we want most to be, we are.” For fashion inspiration, look towards the darker edges & corners of your imagination.  Use this slam as an opportunity to create incredible spooky content, just in time for the Halloween season. Not connecting with Gothic fashion? Consider pulling ideas from darker fashion trends like Dark Academia, Gothcore, Mythical creatures, Whimsicore,  ect. For further inspiration, search #HauntSlam on Instagram to see examples from our last Halloween slam.  Please remember: we celebrate diversity, body positivity, self-expression and creativity. Incorporate your own unique style into your look, let us know if you have any questions, and don't be afraid to get weird.

Models:

Please arrive dressed in your unique interpretation of the theme and be ready to shoot.  Marta Elena Cortez-Neavel (aka Elena From Austin) will have curated collection of wardrobe & accessory items on location for models to incorporate into their look and will be on-hand to help style. Entourage Model & Talent Agency will be offering a fun warm-up for models during arrivals, beginning at 4:30pm. Jasmine Cosmo will be offering micro sessions & touch-ups during arrivals (at first-come-first-serve). Arrivals begin at 4pm. We'll have a space designated for models inside the Neill-Cochran Museum for changing and model's belongings. Please bring hangers for any extra items. Check in, explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, browse wardrobe, and meet other creatives until introductions  begin at 5pm. Please be prepared to work with many different photographers in quick 10 minute sessions.

Photographers:

We appreciate it when photographers & videographers dress in sync with the vibe and rock the theme, but they aren't required to. Photographers should wear comfortable shoes and arrive with their camera ready to shoot. Please try to arrive by 4pm, in time for lighting & gear demos. After checking in, browse Tamron's lenses and Nanlite's lighting, all available to borrow on location. Precision Camera will be available to assist with gear. Prizes will be given away at the end to the participants who get most creative and engaging with Fujifilm, Nanlite and Tamron gear (just for fun, slams are not competitions).  Explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, take a few test shots and chat with fellow creatives. Introductions start at 5pm. We begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different models in quick 10 minute sessions. Personal lighting and film photography are welcome but please tread lightly and check in with us before flying a drone. Photography assistants are required to purchase a general ticket.
