Theme: Dark Academia Boudoir

In simplest terms, think of Dark Academia as vintage ivy league fashion with a gothic twist. The academia aesthetic views knowledge as king. It's classic and European, romantic and tragic, influenced by Greek mythology and poetry with existential themes, authors like Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters, and Jane Austen. Modern-day sources of inspiration include films like Dead Poets Society and Sherlock Holmes. Looking to the heritage of Ivy League universities for inspiration, Dark Academia seeks to emulate the sophistication and status of established educational institutions. Break private school dress code standards with a boudoir twist. Incorporate different textures with knit sweaters, Oxford neckties, button-down cardigans, tights, and sophisticated outerwear, like a trench coat or blazer. For further inspiration, explore Dark Academia Pinterest moodboards HERE and HERE, or search #DarkAcademia on Instagram. If you'd like to exchange ideas and coordinate with others, join the Portrait Slam Forum on Facebook. Our theme is not a costume. Portrait slams celebrate diversity, self-expression, style, individuality and creativity. Let us know if you have questions about our theme and, as always, don't be afraid to get weird.

Models:

Please arrive dressed in theme and ready to shoot. Academia themed accesories will be provided on location by Pioneer Square's Bon Voyage Vintage for models to incorporate into their look, beginning at 5pm - please don't miss this! A prize will be awarded to the model who rocks Bon Voyage Vintage's wardrobe accessories with the most creativity and style. Lingere will not be provided. Consider late June weather and expect to layer up or down, bring base neutrals you're confident in, and comfortable shoes to take full advantage of the space. Michelle Kurtz (@wandering.pisces), Kristen Ray (@KristenRayCreates), & Jon Jacob (@jonjacobb) will be onhand offering makeup micro sessions (a quick touchup or creative addition), first come first serve. Thanks Michelle & Jon! We begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different photographers in quick 10 minute sessions.

Photographers:

We appreciate it when photographers dress in sync with the vibe and rock the theme, but they aren't required to. Photographers should wear comfortable shoes and arrive with their camera ready to shoot.  Please try to arrive by 5:30pm. After checking in, browse Glazer's selection of lighting equipment and Tamron's selection of lenses available for use on location. Glazer's will be giving a prize away at the end to the photographer who gets most creative with equipment.  Explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, take a few test shots, and chat with fellow creatives. Introductions start at 6pm. We begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different models in quick 10 minute sessions. Videography, off camera flash, and film photography are welcome but please check in with us before flying a drone. Photography assistants are required to purchase a general ticket.
