Theme: Light Academia

Light academia is a subculture of the “academia” aesthetic, which takes inspiration from established educational institutions such as Oxford or Yale, and the environments surrounding them. They focus on museums, art galleries, British moors, boarding schools, vintage books, ect. Light academia is very much about positivity and self-care. It can be seen as similar to the cottagecore aesthetic, although has more of a focus on education. It's all about the warm and pleasurable parts of life. The 1930s and 1940s features prominently in the Light Academia aesthetic, especially clothing items worn by students at Oxbridge, Ivy League schools and prep schools of that period. Some of the articles of clothing most associated with the aesthetic include cardigans, blazers, dress shirts, plaid skirts, Oxford Shoes, and clothing made of houndstooth & tweed. The color palette consists mainly of white, beige, browns, light green, and occasionally navy blue. Light academia features idealised aesthetics of higher education and academia, often with books and libraries featuring prominently. Imagery shares similarities with Goth subculture, tending to romanticise the finding of beauty and poetry in dark themes. Portrait slams celebrate diversity, self-expression, style, individuality and creativity. Let us know if you have questions about our theme and, as always, don't be afraid to get weird.

Models:

Please arrive dressed in theme and ready to shoot. A Dark Academia inspired wardrobe will be provided on location by local designers Wavvz Newage for models to incorporate into their look, beginning at 5pm - please don't miss this! A prize will be awarded to the model who rocks Wavvz Newage's wardrobe with the most creativity and style. Bring base neutrals you're confident in, and comfortable shoes to take full advantage of the large space. We begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different photographers in quick 10 minute sessions.

Photographers:

We appreciate it when photographers dress in sync with the vibe and rock the theme, but they aren't required to. Photographers should wear comfortable shoes and arrive with their camera ready to shoot.  Please arrive by 5:30pm. After checking in, browse Camera Bar's selection of lighting equipment and Tamron's selection of lenses available for use on location. Camera Bar will be giving a prize away at the end to the photographer who gets most creative with equipment.  Explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, take a few test shots, and chat with fellow creatives. Introductions start at 6pm. We begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different models in quick 10 minute sessions. Videography, off camera flash, and film photography are welcome but please check in with us before flying a drone. Photography assistants are required to purchase a general ticket.
